Thing to do & see
Gippsland Lakes
Eagle Point is situated on the shores of Lake King. The Mitchell
River discharges into Lake King at Eagle Point, where you will find
the world' s second longest silt jetty.
Lake King is part of the Gippsland Lakes system , Australia' s
biggest and most beautiful expanse of inland waterways with over
400 square kilometers of lakes, rivers, lagoons and islands to explore.
Fishing
In Gippsland, fishing opportunities are plentiful and extend to
estuary, river, beach and offshore areas that will appeal to experienced
anglers, family groups and beginners alike.
As you would expect when fishing within such a huge expanse of
water as the Gippsland Lakes, a boat is a great advantage and there
are a number of local boat hire businesses. For land-based anglers
there are public jetties and wharves around the lakes system, as
well as good access to the banks of the estuarine sections of the
Tambo, Nicholson and Mitchell rivers - all of which provide good
fishing, particularly for bream.
Black bream is the species sought after by recreational anglers
- they are excellent fighters and a superb table fish. Particularly
well regarded areas for bream include Hollands Landing,
Paynesville and Lake King. Aside from bream, anglers can expect
to catch flathead, tailor, mullet, salmon, whiting and trevally.
Flora and Fauna
Wildlife in the area is abundant. Watching the swans on the
lake in great flocks while the pelicans quietly feed in the shallows
on the shoals of fish that inhabit the lakes is a truly spectacular
experience.
Taking a short trip to Paynesville you can visit Raymond Island
which has large colony of Koala that were introduced there from
Phillip Island in 1953 with only 42 animals being relocated at that
time. The island is also an important feeding and nesting ground
for many of the local birdlife, species that can be seen on the
island are rainbow lorikeets, honeyeaters, sea eagles, black swans,
egrets and many species of parrot.
A trip further by boat is the Gippsland Lakes Coastal Park, a unique
and picturesque park consists of lakes, wetlands, marine and terrestrial
environments.
The coast part incorporates the Ninety Mile Beach, a good place
to observe shore and ocean birds such as shearwaters, terns and
gulls. Within the heathy woodland areas of the park you will see
many species of bird including the Common Bronze Wing, Yellow-tailed
Black Cockatoo, Grey Butcherbird, Eastern Yellow Robin and the gracious
Wedge-tailed Eagle. The park supports a large population of Eastern
Grey Kangaroos, Black Wallabies and the common Brush-tailed and
Ring-tailed Possums. Less common mammals include Sugar Gliders,
Eastern Pygmy Possums and the endangered New Holland Mouse.
